Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB) is a non-profit company for applied research and innovation founded in 2001 with over 40 employees. We develop research projects by crosslinking future topics like digitalization, resource efficiency, smart city and climate resilience with the traditional fields of the urban water cycle (www.kompetenz-wasser.de). In addition, KWB promotes the active transfer of knowledge to experts, municipal stakeholders, research partners, as well as to the interested public through public relations and the organization of events.

Internship + optional follow-up Bachelor-, Master thesis: Development and testing of a low-cost LoRaWAN rain gauge/weather station

The adoption of LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area network) technology has gained momentum in the past decade. Cities like Berlin have already established LoRaWAN networks or are actively in the process of doing so. Simultaneously, the availability of low-cost sensors is expanding, opening up new possibilities for diverse applications. Among the many beneficiaries of these technologies are research institutes, which can leverage these innovations for environmental monitoring and data collection. The objective of the internship and Bachelor’s thesis will be to develop and test a low-cost LoRaWAN rain gauge, contributing to the advancement of accessible, scalable solutions for meteorological and environmental studies. This project provides an excellent opportunity to combine practical engineering skills with IoT technology. Your work will be actively supported by the KWB research team.

Your opportunity to make an impact:

  • Become familiar with sensor technology, data analysis & programming
  • Defining feasibility of using LoRaWAN rain gauges and workplan
  • Practically test the LoRaWAN rain gauge

The aim is to write a thematical Bachelor’s thesis after the 3-month internship.

Your areas of knowleadge:

  • You are studying environmental technology, environmental engineering, civil engineering or other engineering faculties
  • Interest in applied research and practical work in the water sector
  • Interest in monitoring and data transmission (LoRaWAN)
  • First programming skills (R, Python) & data analysis
  • Ability to work independently, organised and structured with reliable time management
  • Communication skills in English (B2), (German beneficial but not essential)
  • (If necessary, willingness to travel to EU partner countries)
