The university of today, for the knowledge of tomorrow

UMIT TIROL - Private University of Health Sciences and Health Technology is an accredited, internationally recognized private university owned by the State of Tyrol and the Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck (LFUI) with its headquarters in Hall in Tyrol/Austria.

The Institute of Automation and Control Engineering (IACE) in the Department for Biomedical Computer Science and Mechatronics is looking for a:

Postdoctoral Researcher in Systems Theory and Control Engineering

at an employment level of 100% (40 hours / week) and a fixed-term employment contract of initially 3 years.

The institute focuses on model-based control of linear and nonlinear systems, with a particular emphasis on distributed parameter systems. Current research topics include the time-optimal control of mechatronic systems in the semiconductor industry, the control of exhaust aftertreatment systems in large gas engines, topics in mobile robotics, and the control theory of distributed parameter systems.

The proposed position is in the latter field of systems and control theory of distributed-parameter systems and is partially funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Your Tasks:

  • research in the field of distributed parameter systems (with the aim of writing a thesis), such as:
    • normal forms for linear and non-linear MIMO systems
    • flatness-based controllability analysis of distributed parameter systems
    • control and observer design based on normal forms
  • participation in the supervision of doctoral students in the research project and related topics
  • preparation of scientific journal and conference publications and presentations at scientific conferences in the above areas
  • preparation of research proposals
  • preparation of lectures and courses

Your Profile:

  • dissertation (PhD) in the area of systems theory, control engineering, or applied mathematics with a focus on control theory
  • previous knowledge in the area of control of distributed-parametric systems as well as the classical theory of partial differential equations
  • good programming skills (confident use of simulation environments, particulary Matlab or Python)
  • team and communication skills as well as willingness for co-operation with university partners
  • interest in further topics in control theory (e.g. machine learning, optimal control) and their applications
  • willingness to participate in teaching
