Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB) is a non-profit company for applied research and innovation founded in 2001 with over 35 employees. We develop research projects by crosslinking future topics like digitalization, resource efficiency, smart city and climate resilience with the traditional fields of the urban water cycle (www.kompetenz-wasser.de). In addition, KWB promotes the active transfer of knowledge to experts, municipal stakeholders, research partners, as well as to the interested public through public relations and the organization of events.

Internship, optional follow-up Master thesis: Failure mode assessment of blue-green infrastructure (BGI) with LoRaWAN AI sensors

Working hours

40h/week

Duration

3 month

Salary

556 € per month

Start

from 01.03.2025

Numerous cities and municipalities around the world are facing major challenges with regard to increasing urbanisation and its fatal interaction with climate change. Blue-green infrastructure measures (BGI) can improve the quality of life of residents and mitigate negative effects, such as flooding or urban heat islands. To ensure long term functionality of BGIs, novel monitoring approaches for maintenance and failure mode detection are being investigated in the EU funded research project City Blues. One of these monitoring approaches are LoRaWAN AI sensors. In the internship you will review theoretical possibilities, followed by a practical phase of testing the sensors. The internship will also serve to define research questions for a master thesis, in which LoRaWAN AI sensors should be employed on BGI in Berlin to validate the quality of collected data for functionality assessment. Your work will be actively supported by the KWB research team.

Your opportunity to make an impact:

  • Become familiar with BGIs, sensor technology, data analysis & programming
  • Defining feasibility of LoRaWAN sensors for BGI assessment and workplan
  • Practically testing the LoRaWAN sensors in use case/pilot

The aim is to write a Master thesis after the 3-month internship.

Your areas of knowleadge:

  • You are studying environmental technology, environmental engineering, civil engineering or other engineering faculties .
  • Interest in applied research and practical work in the water sector
  • Interest in BGI, their functionality and planning objectives
  • Interest in monitoring and data transmission (LoRaWAN)
  • First programming skills (R, Python, …) & data analysis
  • Ability to work independently with reliable time management
  • Communication skills in English (B2), (German beneficial but not essential)
  • (If necessary, willingness to travel to EU partner countries)

Benefits:

  • Diverse subject areas and interdisciplinary approaches
  • Writing master thesis on novel topic
  • Excellent working atmosphere & relaxed communication with supervisors
  • Fast and efficient communication thanks to small teams
