The Germanisches Nationalmuseum (GNM) is the largest museum of cultural history in the German-speaking region. At our Institut für Kunsttechnik und Konservierung (IKK) we offer an inspiring work environment in one of the largest and technically most advanced institutions of its kind in Germany. In the studios of the institute our restorers are not only entrusted with the material conservation but also with the technical examination of objects in the collection. Conservator (m/f/d) of musical instruments

Your role:

  • Manage our collection of musical instruments with respect to conservation, especially regarding the future redesign of our permanent exhibition
  • Plan and carry out different conservation and restoration measures
  • Support collection and storage work, special exhibitions and loan transactions
  • Guide and supervise interns
  • Conduct subject-related guided tours
  • Provide support to external researchers as major point of contact

Your profile:

  • Degree in conservation/restoration, ideally with a focus on the conservation of musical instruments
  • Strong knowledge and proven track record in the conservation and restoration of musical instruments
  • Self-reliant and committed working style along with the willingness to work as part of a team and to take on cross-departmental tasks
  • Experience with the various restoration activities in a museum advantageous
  • Solid IT skills (familiarity with MS Office and digital image processing is required) and the willingness to learn how to use our database systems
  • Good/very good German language skills both spoken and written desirable; a good command of English required; additional languages beneficial; support with German language courses possible depending on individual level of knowledge
